Advanced Spectroscopy & Chemistry European Master Scholarships, Erasmus Mundus

The ASC network aims at preparing students to become experts and develop international skills towards doctoral studies, and/or professional industrial careers in chemical analysis and characterization of the structure of materials.

A mobility scheme ensures that, in addition to high specialization and access to state of the art technologies, students will do a common core curriculum of studies in different higher education institutions throughout Europe.

Contents:
A two year (4 semesters, 30 ECTS each) Master programme; courses are taught in english.

The first semester is dedicated to providing all candidates with a common platform in advanced spectroscopic methods, including magnetic resonance, mass spectrometry, optical spectroscopy and diffraction techniques.

In the second and third semesters, more specialised instruction is provided with applications in molecular synthesis, biology, nanotechnology, modelling, “green chemistry”, medicine, and new energy sources.

The Master‘s thesis will be strongly encouraged to be based on a collaborative project between two of the partner institutions, thus adding an even more challenging European dimension to the programme.

Partner Universities:

  • University of Bergen, Norway
  • University of Bologna, Italy
  • University of Helsinki, Finland
  • Jagiellonian University, Poland
  • University of Leipzig, Germany
  • University Lille 1, France
  • Universidad Complutense de Madrid, Spain

Prospects:
Students completing this European master’s degree with a thesis will be better prepared for European R and D careers in instrument manufactures, spectroscopic laboratories, analytical enterprises or administrative organizations.

Further scientific progress towards PhD programmes will also be made available.

Type of degree:
Double/Joint Chemistry Euromaster® of Science with thesis diploma in «Advanced Spectroscopy in Chemistry» awarded by the universities of the consortium, after completion of 90 ECTS of courses and 30 ECTS of a Master thesis.

A diploma supplement will be provided.

The Chemistry Euromaster® Label has been awarded on 01.12.2008 by the European Chemistry Thematic Network Association (ECTNA) to the consortium members for the EM Master Course in “Advanced Spectroscopy in Chemistry” for a period of 5 years.

Targetted Students:
Student Application for admission in the ASC programme is entitled for students holding a: Eurobachelor in Chemistry or equivalent education in the field of Chemistry, Biochemistry, Physical Chemistry and Physics. Students from all over the world are welcome to join the programme.

Admission criteria:
The selection procedure takes place within a framework common to the seven partners of the consortium. The partners select on the basis of study results, a CV, a statement of purpose and two letters of recommendation. They may not discriminate between their own students, students of other universities of EU or non-EU countries.

Application, evaluation procedure
All applications are assessed by a centralized consortium commission. A weighting scheme is applied to the following selection criteria, assessed from 1 (minimum) to 5 (maximum), thus producing a weighted arithmetic mean:

  • academic records of previous studies(coefficient 6, threshold 4)
  • scientific background of undergraduate studies (coefficient 4, threshold 3)
  • ranking of Academic Institution where undergraduate studies were done (coefficient 2, threshold 2)
  • motivation letter (coefficient 2, threshold 3)
  • recommendation letters (coefficient 2, threshold 3)
  • mastering of foreign language(coefficient 2, threshold 2)
  • acquired practical experience (coefficient 1, threshold 2)
  • Awards and grants (coefficient 1, threshold 1)
