The Department of Mathematics has a vacancy for a research fellow in applied and computational mathematics for a period of 4 years from August 2011. The PhD position is within the activity "Simulation of strongly heterogeneous reservoirs". The activity contains mathematical and numerical modeling of two-phase flow in heterogeneous and fractured porous media. The tasks will include new model formulations and development, testing and analysis of new discretization methods, as well as simulation on realistic reservoir data.

The working location will be at Uni CIPR (Centre for Integrated Petroleum Research). Uni CIPR is a subsidiary of Uni Research AS, a research company affiliated to the University of Bergen.

Applicants must have achieved a master`s degree or equivalent in applied and computational mathematics or have submitted their master thesis for assessment by the application deadline. It is a prerequisite, however, that the formal admission requirements for the PhD programme are met before appointment can be made.

Good knowledge in reservoir mechanics will be an advantage. Strong skills for written and oral communication is a prerequisite.

The research fellow must take part in the University`s approved PhD programme leading to the degree within a time limit of 3 years. Application for admission to the PhD programme, including a project plan outline for the training module, will be worked out in collaboration with a supervisor.

In total, the fellowship period is 4 years. For positions with a 4-year duration 25 pct of the period will be designated to teaching and/or administrative duties. The fellowship period may be reduced if the successful applicant has held previous employment as research fellow or similar.

The teaching language will normally be Norwegian.

Persons of different ethnic backgrounds are therefore encouraged to apply for the position.

The University of Bergen applies the principles of public openness when recruiting staff to scientific positions. Hence, the evaluation committee`s report will be disclosed (in full detail, and not anonymised) to all of the applicants.

Information about the applicant may be made public even though the applicant has requested not to be named in the list of applicants. The applicant will be notified if his/her request is not respected.

The application should include a brief statement of the applicant`s research interests and motivation for applying.
