Undergraduate and Honours Scholarships, South Africa
Scholarships are available to students who wish to study towards a Bachelor of Science degree majoring in Physics and Mathematics and to students who wish to study towards a Bachelor of Electronic Engineering degree in 2011.Please complete only one application form.Read the information section very carefully, then complete the application form. Please return ONLY the application form, not the information section.

No late or incomplete applications will be accepted. The SA SKA Project reserves the right not to accept any application in part or in whole.The decision of the SA SKA Project will be final and no correspondence will be entered into after the decision.
Successful students will be notified by 24 December 2010.
Selection criteria
1. Applicants must be South African citizens
2. Applicants who will be studying Physics and Mathematics or Electronic Engineering at a South African University at first year, second year,third year or honours level in 2011 may apply
3. Minimum C in mathematics and science for Grade 12 or minimum 60%for major subjects at undergraduate level
4. Intention to pursue postgraduate research in astronomy or electronic engineering
Note:
1. As a business unit of the National Research Foundation, the SA SKA Project is committed to employment equity and redress.
2. Award of a scholarship is not guaranteed even if a student meets all the criteria listed above. The SA SKA Project reserves the right not to accept any application in part or in whole. The decision of the SA SKA Project will be final and no correspondence will be entered into after the decision.
Conditions of scholarship award
1. The award of an SA SKA Project undergraduate scholarship to a student will be based on academic performance, determined through the evaluation of the student’s most recent Grade 12 or university results. Other selection criteria include academic merit, leadership qualities, and previous award of prizes and honours.
2. Students in Grade 12 in 2010must include a certified copy of their most recent Grade 12 results with their applications and, when available, a certified copy of their final Grade 12 results.
3. Students in first year, second year or third year study at a university must include a certified copy of all university results from first year to current year of study and a certified copy of their final Grade 12 results.
4. Short listed applicants may be interviewed (in person or telephonically)
5. Students who are awarded a scholarship will have to provide proof of registration with an appropriate university before any funds will be paid to the university.
6. After a scholarship is awarded, a change in course of study or institution where the studies are to be undertaken requires prior approval from the SA SKA Project.
7. Continued funding is dependent on satisfactory performance determined twice a year. All scholarship holders will be required to submit their university academic transcripts in June and December of each year for evaluation by the SA SKA Project.
8. Scholarship holders who do not obtain the degree for which the scholarship was awarded, relinquish their studies or leave the tertiary institution during the period for which the scholarship was awarded, will have to refund all payments of the scholarship already received.
9. On completion of the studies supported by means of the scholarship, students are required to submit proof that they have been awarded the degree.
The following scholarships are available in 2011:
First year in 2011 up to and including honours
Scholarship Duration:4 years
Maximum scholarship grant in 2011 (including fees):R 87 000.00
Second year in 2011 up to and including honours
Scholarship Duration:3 years
Maximum scholarship grant in 2011 (including fees):R 87 000.00
Third year in 2011 up to and including honours
Scholarship Duration: 2 years
Maximum scholarship grant in 2011 (including fees): R 87 000.00
Honours in 2010
Scholarship Duration:1 year
Maximum scholarship grant in 2011 (including fees):R 87 000.00
The amount quoted above includes the tuition fees due to the university and a grant for living expenses.
No additional funding will be provided for any reason.
Payment of SA SKA undergraduate scholarships
1. Funds will be paid to the university in two installments. The first installment will be paid at the start of the academic year (February) and the second installment will be paid in July / August, subject to satisfactory performance.
2. The amount remaining after tuition has been paid must be used by the scholarship-holder to pay for living costs (rent /residence, food etc.) and for books and stationery. No additional funding will be provided for any reason.
3. Any other funding which a scholarship holder receives must be declared to the SA SKA Project in writing.
NOTE: In completing an application form for a scholarship from the SA SKA Project, you accept the conditions listed above.
