The School of Mathematics and Physics is offering 7 MSc DEL Taught Studentships (EPSRC Science & Innovation) for students enrolling full-time on the postgraduate MSc in Plasma Physics for entry in September 2010.

The studentship may cover the cost of approved University home tuition fees (GBP 3,466)
and a stipend of GBP 3,000 per annum.

The Scholarships will be awarded competitively on the basis of academic performance.
Eligibility criteria applicable.

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA

To be eligible for consideration for a DEL studentship, a candidate must satisfy ALL the eligibility criteria based on nationality, residency, citizenship and academic qualifications. The main criteria are:

Academic Requirements

  • a) The desired academic qualification for a DEL taught studentship is a 2.2 Honours degree from a University in the UK or Ireland, or a non-UK qualification considered by the University as equivalent to this standard. Normally the qualifications must be obtained by the start of the studentship, usually 1 October. Candidates must provide official, final results of all qualifications to be used to meet the academic requirements, before the start of the studentship.
  • b) Candidates who already hold a doctoral degree or who have been registered on a

programme of research leading to the award of a doctoral degree on a full-time basis
for more than one year funded from any source are not eligible for a studentship.

Residence Requirements

To qualify for the full DEL (i.e. payment of fees and maintenance contribution) applicants must have been resident in the United Kingdom or Islands (includes Isle of Man and Channel islands), or elsewhere in the European Union (for fees only studentships), throughout the period of 3 years immediately preceding the start of the studentship (or would have been so resident had you, your spouse or either parent not been employed temporarily outside the (UK).

  • For Non-EU nationals – the main purpose of your residence in the UK must NOT have been to receive full time education during any part of that 3 year period.
  • For EU nationals – where the main purpose for your residence in the UK was to receive full time education you must have been ordinarily resident in the European Economic Area (EEA) and / or Switzerland immediately before that 3 year period.
  • EU nationals may qualify for a “Fees only” studentship if you are in the UK as a selfsufficient person or as a student, or you are the family member of such a person.

You must have been ordinarily resident in the EEA and / or Switzerland for 3 years before the first day of the first academic year of the course. The main purpose for your residence in the EEA and / or Switzerland must not have been to receive full time education during any part of that 3 year period.

  • Non-EU residents are not eligible for DEL studentships.
  • Non-EU residents are not eligible for DEL studentships.

Citizenship Requirements

  • a) You must be a British Citizen, EU national or relevant family member of an EU national. You may be eligible for support if you are the child of either a Swiss national or Turkish worker. For Non-EU nationals – You must be “settled” in the UK by the closing date for the award. “Settled” means being both ordinarily resident in the UK and without any immigration restriction on the length of your stay in the UK. To be “settled” you must either have the Right of Abode or Indefinite Leave to Enter or Remain in the UK, or be a national of the Republic of Ireland, or have the right of permanent residence in the UK under EC Law.

NB if you acquire “settled” status after the closing date for the award. Please contact the relevant University Authority. Your application may be considered as a late application.

2. VALUE OF DEL TAUGHT STUDENTSHIPS (MSc Plasma Physics)

  • A Full award includes a maintenance contribution and the payment of tuition fees. A Fees Only award covers only tuition fees. Fees for 2010-11 are £3,466.
  • The maintenance contribution for 2010-11 is £3,000 per annum. This will be paid in monthly instalments in arrears during the period 1 October 2010 to 31 March 2011.

3. SELECTION PROCEDURE AND NOTIFICATION

Please check the School websites for further details before applying.

Applicants will be selected by their School and notified by the Postgraduate Office of the outcome normally within 6-8 weeks of the closing date for awards. Successful applicants will be asked to confirm in writing their acceptance of the studentship and its conditions by a specified date (normally within 10 days from the date of the letter of offer). If an applicant does not accept the award by the specified date it will be allocated to the next applicant on the ranked list.

4. RETURN OF COMPLETED APPLICATION FORM

Completed online application forms for Postgraduate Admission and Awards should be submitted via the web portal by 5pm on the closing date identified by the School to which the applicant is applying.

NB. If you miss the closing date it is highly unlikely that you will receive an award, as all those who meet the closing date will be considered before applicants who are late.

The University will not accept responsibility for any applications which are lost or which fail to reach the Postgraduate Office for whatever reason.
